Long Beach, CA – Beginning Sept. 19, 2022, the City of Long Beach will offer a nine-month Teen Academy for 100 teens ages 13 to 18. The Teen Academy program, offered through the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM), is designed to provide teens with experiences, activities and resources that support their wellness and future success.
“Our new Teen Academy is one of the many ways we are continuing to support and uplift young people in our community,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “By focusing on social engagement and expanding access to critical resources like mental health care, financial literacy training and job experience, we are ensuring they have the tools to succeed.”
Participants of the program will engage in recreational and social activities to help mitigate the negative effects of isolation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and will also have increased access to resources in areas such as mental health, financial literacy, educational opportunities and job pathways. Applications and waivers to be signed by parents will be available during normal hours at all six PRM Teen Centers beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. Registration will remain open until all spots are filled.
Teen Academy members will gain work experience by committing 10 hours each month working alongside Recreation staff planning and implementing different recreation programs. Academy members who complete 250 total work experience hours will be offered a job application and interview as well as the opportunity to participate in the PRM Recreation staff “Rookie School,” which is offered to new summer staff to teach them the latest and most creative skills for running successful recreation programs and help them become well prepared for a job in the parks and recreation field.
“This new Academy will give teens opportunities to learn how to lead healthy lives and explore job pathways,” said PRM Director Brent Dennis. “The friends and positive experiences gained from the program will help many teens feel connected again after the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The Teen Academy will run September 2022 through June 2023, weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m., at PRM’s six teen centers:
More information about teen center programming is available on the PRM Youth and Teen Center Programs webpage.
The Teen Academy is made possible by the Long Beach Recovery Act, a plan to fund economic and public health initiatives for Long Beach residents, workers and businesses critically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of $60,000 has been allocated from the Recovery Act to support the Teen Academy. Additional information about the Long Beach Recovery Act is available at longbeach.gov/recovery.
The Teen Academy aligns with Goal 4 of Long Beach’s Race and Reconciliation Initiative to connect teen centers with workforce development services to enhance early exposure to job training and life skills.
